Welcome to Lactation Life. I am looking forward to working with you. Here is some information to know before we meet.
Before our Visit
Online Portal - If you have not signed up for your patient portal, please do so. It is through that portal that you can complete additional forms I may send, review notes and recommendations from our visit, and communicate with me through secure messaging. Click on the link in your confirmation email to sign up.
While you are in there, please upload a picture of yourself to your account. (It is easiest on a phone/tablet since you can take a selfie or use one you already have).
If you are an Aetna member, please upload a photo of the front and back of your card. (Click on Documents, then the red Upload button in the lower right corner).
Once I confirm your appointment, you will receive another email that includes the Intake Form. Please complete that form within 24 hours of our visit.
App - If you'd like, download the Practice Better app on to your phone or tablet. It is the easiest way to see all your notes and communicate with me.
Intake Form - Please complete the intake form within 24 hours of our appointment.
Feeding Baby - Try not to feed your baby within an hour of our visit. We will want to feed the baby around 20-30 minutes into the visit. Of course, I don't ever recommend starving a baby, so if s/he is crying and miserable, try to feed enough for baby to be comfortable.
State of your House - Please DO NOT clean your house for me or apologize when I enter. I am there to work with you and your baby, not look at your house. I promise I do not care about the state of your house. I would much rather you spend time with your baby than cleaning up...dishes and vacuuming can wait!
During our Visit
Your Space - One of the reasons I love home visits is because we get to work where you are most comfortable nursing. We can be in the living room, in your bedroom, or in the nursery, wherever you want to be.
Scale - I will ask to set up my scale on a flat surface where I can plug it in. That can be a hard floor, table, dresser, or counter.
Support Person - I am happy to have your support person in the room with us so that you have the support you need during the time I'm there, and when I leave.
Notes - I will take notes on my computer as we talk and work on issues. I want to make sure I am remembering and using all the information you provide to best help you and your baby. I may ask you to repeat something or ask for a moment to complete some notes. Please understand my full attention is still with you and your baby, even as I type.
Procedures - I will wash my hands before touching you and your baby, as well as use a glove when assessing baby's oral function. I will also ask to touch you if needed. Please feel comfortable saying no. We will chat at the beginning, and then I will take a look at baby, you, and feeding so that we can best determine how to move forward.
It's all about You - There is more than one right way to feed your baby. Please don't hesitate to tell me if something doesn't feel right for you, or if any plan we create doesn't sound like it will work for you and your family. I am there to help you solve the issues you are having, give you the best advice I can, and work with you to find a solution. Please be honest with me.
Care Plan - Together we will create a plan to work on over the next days and weeks. We will review it while I am there and then you will have access to it through your Online Portal.
After our Visit
Online Portal - Here isthat online portal again...When I leave, you will have access to your Care Plan, notes from our visit, and your receipt. It is also where you will follow up with me in our chosen time frame using secure messaging. Use the link in your confirmation email to sign up. If you've already signed up, you can login here.
Pediatrician's Report - Within 24 hours I will fax a report to your pediatrician (and other medical providers as needed).
Support - You have 2 weeks of unlimited messaging as we work on the issues that arose during our consult and the intervening time. I expect to hear from you. If I don't, I assume everything is going well! If you would like to continue that support after 2 weeks, you can subscribe to continued support through secure messaging for $25/week.
Follow up Consult - While I wish I had a magic wand to waive away any struggle you are having, solving breastfeeding issues often takes time. We will do the best we can in the time we have, however sometimes further visits are necessary. Any follow up consult you schedule allows us to continue working on your needs and extends the support you have an additional 2 weeks for each visit.
Lactation Life Breastfeeding Support Group - I host an in-person group each month. Join us with questions, concerns, joys, or just for camaraderie among other breastfeeding parents. 3rd Friday of the month, 7:00-9:00pm Belliacres Pediatrics (I use their space, so it is open to all, not just their patients). 2538 Davidsonville Rd, Gambrills
